(54079) GlobalProtect VPN - Maintenacne Dec 18, 2025 07:00-07:30 CST

Northwestern IT will perform an update to GlobalProtect, the University’s Virtual Private Network (VPN), that will introduce an update to our DNS server IP adddresses. This change will align us with our current campus standard dns configuration. No service interruption is expected from this work.

Northwestern Information Technology will be performing maintenance on network infrastructure at the locations listed below. This work is to increase the bandwidth capacity of the network equipment. Network connectivity including VoIP phone, wireless, and wired services will be affected for about 1-2 minutes as each device is upgraded.

During (regularly scheduled) server maintenance, some Canvas custom apps (created by Northwestern) will be affected briefly as follows: Nebula, Noterra, Discussion Analytics, Canvas Chatbot, NU Files, NU Submissions, NU Academic, GradeSync and NU administrative apps for course combine, user, course and prep site creation and admin password update) will be down for only 15 minutes (7:30-7:45 am), while the (admin) NU Batch Enrollment tool will be down from 7:10-7:50 am.

(54004) Global Load Balancer Software Upgrades Dec 22, 2025 19:00-23:00 CST

Northwestern Information Technology will be upgrading the Global Traffic Managers (GTMs), which are used to handle load balancing between services that have presences on both Evanston and Chicago campuses. This is a fully redundant system, and service will continue to run without interruption on one system while the other is upgraded. This maintenance will keep us aligned with the vendor recommended software and will address minor security issues.
No service interruption to applications using the GTMs is expected.

Abbott Hall Power Maintenance Dec 23, 2025 12:00-15:00 CST

Update - The generator repair has been rescheduled to Tuesday, 12/23/2025 from 12:00 PM to 3:00 PM.

Scheduled - As part of a critical repair for the generator that serves Abbott Hall, Northwestern Information Technology will be installing new batteries on Tuesday, 12/23/2025. During this time no service interruptions are expected, but the following services will be operating a reduced level of power redundancy for the duration of the maintenance window from 12:00 PM to 3:00 PM:

Internet Services

There will be a generator run after the installation of the new batteries has been completed to verify that the generator is functional.

If there is an unexpected loss of utility power during this work, there may be campus-wide impacts to services beyond just Abbott Hall.

Scheduled - Northwestern Information Technology will be performing maintenance on the university voice system. We will be working with our local telephone service provider to migrate approximately 1450 of our Evanston telephone numbers to a new circuit. Once the moves are started, all numbers in the group will be unable to receive inbound off campus calls. Each number will return to service once it is migrated. On-campus calls as well as outbound calls will not be affected.

The work for this window will involve a small set of University critical numbers, some of which may be contained within the ranges below. The critical numbers will all be returned to service within 30 minutes; the rest of the numbers will all be returned to service within three hours.

Scheduled - The myHR system will undergo scheduled maintenance in order to apply Tax Update 25-D. This maintenance necessitates system downtime, meaning myHR, including Self Service and Careers, will be unavailable beginning Saturday, December 13, at 7 a.m. through approximately 3 p.m.

What This Means

• Functionality — The system components and capabilities you currently enjoy on myHR will continue to function after the upgrade as they do now. Your user experience will be unchanged. Before logging into myHR after the update, users will need to clear their cache.

• Data Availability — During the downtime, data lookup will remain available to administrators in the myHR reporting database. All reports will remain accessible in Cognos and myHR reporting queries.
