(46901) University Telephone Services Jul 3, 2025 06:01-08:01 CDT

Northwestern IT will be performing software upgrades on the university telephone system to address security vulnerabilities. This work will cause a service interruption of ~10 minutes for some analog telephone lines on the Chicago and Evanston campuses. Analog telephone lines are used for applications such as fax machines, modems, and elevator phones among others. Regular Voice over IP telephones in workspaces and conference rooms will not be affected.

Scheduled Maintenance for CAESAR System Upgrade

The CAESAR system will undergo scheduled maintenance to upgrade the underlying PeopleTools platform and apply Critical Patch Updates, PUM image updates, and other necessary patches to enhance performance and address security vulnerabilities. This work also includes the implementation of EntraID, replacing ForgeRock.

To complete this extensive work, CAESAR will be unavailable beginning Thursday, July 10, at 5 p.m. through Saturday, July 12, at approximately 6 p.m. This timeline was selected in coordination with key business partners to minimize disruption.

What This Means
• Functionality — All existing system features and capabilities in CAESAR will continue to function as expected after the upgrade. Users will need to clear their browser cache before logging in after the maintenance window.
• Data Availability — While CAESAR is offline, data will not be available in the system. However, report database will remain accessible for users who rely on reporting data.

Quest Research Computing Cluster September Maintenance Sep 8, 2025 08:00 - Sep 12, 2025 17:00 CDT

Quest, including the Quest Analytics Nodes, the Genomics Compute Cluster (GCC), the Kellogg Linux Cluster (KLC), and Quest OnDemand, will be unavailable for scheduled maintenance starting at 8 a.m. on Monday, September 8, and ending at 5 p.m. on Friday, September 12. Globus will also be unavailable for file transfers to and from Quest, and between Quest and the Research Data Storage Services (RDSS)/FSMRESFILES.
This maintenance is necessary to apply critical system upgrades and perform regular system care. After the maintenance, multi-node (or parallel) jobs will benefit from more stable internode communication.
During this downtime, the following maintenance will be performed:

• Quest's job scheduler, Slurm, will be upgraded to 24.11.5 enabling features such as enhanced job utilization tracking.
• Security patches will be applied to all Quest nodes.
• License managers for licensed software on Quest will be migrated to a new server.
• Power and cooling equipment maintenance will be performed for the healthy operation of computing infrastructure.
• Network maintenance will be performed to improve communication across the nodes and the storage system.

Impact on Quest and Globus Users
• Access to Quest will be unavailable. Users will not be able to submit new jobs, run jobs, access files stored on Quest, or use the Quest Analytics Nodes, GCC, KLC, and Quest OnDemand during the maintenance window.
• Jobs submitted to Quest through Slurm with a wall time that extends beyond the start of the downtime will not run and must be resubmitted after the maintenance. These jobs will receive a "ReqNodeNotAvail, Reserved_for_maintenance" message as the queue reason.
• User jobs and processes running on the Quest login nodes, the Quest Analytics Nodes, and KLC will be canceled at the beginning of the downtime.
• The Globus data transfer tool will be unavailable to transfer files from and to Quest and between Quest and Research Data Storage Services (RDSS)/FSMRESFILES: https://services.northwestern.edu/TDClient/30/Portal/KB/ArticleDet?ID=2017
• Requests submitted for Quest and Globus shortly before or during the downtime will be addressed following the maintenance period.
• The expiration dates of all user files in Quest global scratch space will be extended for another 30 days before downtime. Data in scratch space will have updated timestamps to allow data to remain in scratch. Scheduled - Northwestern IT will be working with our vendor to upgrade hardware on the two-way radio system on July 1, 2025. During this maintenance window some equipment will replaced. Work will be performed on July 1st beginning at 6:00 AM and concluding by 6:15 AM. The impact on users is that all radios will see "Out of Range" on their radios and there will be no service on either campus. The only exception is limited radio to radio communication for UP CSOs, Facilities, and TNS who will be able to use secondary zone channel 4 for a talk around which is programmed into the radios. Facilities Dispatch stations will not function. NUPD dispatch stations will see Starcom and Cook County resources but not Northwestern’s radio network.

Additional work will be performed on July 1st beginning at 7:00 AM concluding by 7:15 AM and 7:45 AM concluding by 8 AM. General two-way radio coverage and operation on the Evanston and Chicago campuses will not be impacted.

Scheduled - The myHR system will undergo scheduled maintenance to upgrade the underlying technology platform and receive Critical Patch Updates and other Selective Adoption patches to address vulnerabilities. The work requires a more extensive downtime, and together with our business partners, we have the identified maintenance date for myHR. myHR will be unavailable beginning Thursday, June 26, at 5 p.m. through Saturday, June 28, at approximately 6 p.m.

What This Means
• Functionality — The system components and capabilities you currently enjoy in myHR will continue to function after the upgrade as they do now. Before logging into myHR after the upgrade, users will need to clear their cache.
• Data Availability — During the downtime, data lookup will remain available to administrators in the myHR reporting database. All reports will remain accessible in Cognos and myHR reporting queries.

Identified - Due to expected temperatures surpassing 95 degrees Fahrenheit, Quest will have reduced availability to decrease heat generation and protect Quest equipment in the data center.

Northwestern Information Technology will reduce General Access computing capacity starting on Thursday, June 19, 9:00 AM and monitor the temperature. Operations will be returned to normal when actual and forecasted ambient air temperatures are favorable for Quest to operate at full capacity.

User Impact
• Quest General Access users will see increased wait times for their jobs during this period.
• Running jobs will not be impacted.
• There will not be any reduction in computing resources for Priority Access (i.e. purchased resources).
