Scheduled Maintenance

(50822) University Telephone Services Maintenance Evanston Campus Oct 23, 2025 19:00-23:00 CDT

Northwestern Information Technology will be performing maintenance on the university voice system. We will be working with our local telephone service provider to migrate our Evanston numbers to a new circuit. Once the moves are started, all numbers in the group will be unable to receive inbound off campus calls. Each number will return to service once it is migrated. The estimated time to complete the entire migration will be approximately three to four hours. No impact to on campus or outbound calling is expected.

Please note that a small set of University critical numbers that may fall into the ranges listed below will be scheduled for a shorter maintenance window on November 3. Northwestern Information Technology will be performing maintenance on network equipment which filters traffic between the internet and campus. This work is being performed to replace this equipment with new hardware. This upgrade is expected to be non-service affecting with the exception of the remote sites indicated below.

Scheduled - Northwestern IT will be performing maintenance on the load balancers that provide access to Quest login and Analytics Nodes on Wednesday, October 22 between 7 and 8:30 a.m. This work is necessary to apply a critical security patch to our load balancers.

User Impact:
During the maintenance, users will experience intermittent interruptions in their connections to Quest login nodes (including FastX) and Analytics Nodes. If you are disconnected from the login or Analytics Nodes, you will need to reconnect and start a new session. Quest OnDemand sessions or scheduled batch jobs through Slurm will not be affected. We recommend users save their work before 7 a.m. and refrain from starting critical work during the maintenance window on the login or Analytics Nodes.

This work is being performed to mitigate several security vulnerabilities. This maintenance will affect those services that only utilize the Evanston Data Center Production Quest-Research load balancer service. Affected systems should not experience any service interruption due to the redundancy of the system.

Update - Earlier this evening, Canvas was restored and is available to the University community.

Currently, two University services remain impacted by the global AWS issue. At this time, Qualtrics continues to report degraded service and Smartsheet reports it has recovered from the earlier interruption but will continue monitoring to ensure the service remains stable. The Northwestern IT Service Operation Center will also monitor the status of Qualtrics and Smartsheet throughout the evening.

The next update will be provided at 07:00 CDT on Tuesday, October 21, unless both services are restored before that time.

Amazon is currently throttling requests for new resources, including EC2 instances, while they work on remediating the underlying issue.

Our software vendors are closely monitoring AWS’s recovery efforts and working to restore full functionality as quickly as possible.

The IT firewall protects IT networks on the Evanston campus and also acts as the GlobalProtect VPN service. This new software brings us to the latest vendor recommended software and also protects us from security vulnerabilities that have been released.
