Scheduled
Quest, including the Quest Analytics Nodes and the Kellogg Linux Cluster (KLC), will be unavailable due to scheduled maintenance starting at 5 a.m. on Monday, September 18, and ending approximately at 10 a.m. on Saturday, September 23. This maintenance is necessary to apply upgrades and critical system patches that will allow integration of the latest hardware technologies with the cluster. Quest, including all types of access to data on Quest, will be unavailable throughout the entire maintenance period.

During this downtime, the following maintenance will be performed:
• Quest’s job scheduler, Slurm, will be upgraded to version 23.02.
• R and RStudio will be upgraded to versions 4.2.3 and 2023.06 respectively on Quest Analytics Nodes.
• JupterHub will be upgraded to version 4.0.1 on Quest Analytics Nodes. The default Python version will be 3.11.
• InfiniBand interconnect drivers will be upgraded to integrate the next generation of computing hardware and to improve stability.
• The latest security patches will be applied to all Quest nodes.

Impact on Quest Users
• Users will not be able to log in to Quest, submit new jobs, run jobs, access files stored on Quest, or use the Quest Analytics Nodes and KLC during the maintenance window.
• Jobs with a wall time that extends beyond the start of the downtime will not run and must be resubmitted after the maintenance. Any of such jobs will receive a “ReqNodeNotAvail, Reserved_for_maintenance” message as the queue reason.
• Jobs running on the Quest Analytics Nodes and KLC will be canceled at the beginning of the downtime.
• RStudio users on Quest Analytics nodes will need to reinstall their R packages due to the R version upgrade. To avoid any disruption, the R packages can be installed for R version 4.2.3 prior to downtime on Quest. Northwestern IT Knowledge Base documents are available to provide additional information for the users:

• Globus data transfer tool will be unavailable to transfer files from/to Quest and between Quest and RDSS/FSMResFiles.
•The allocation processing will be paused for the maintenance. For timely completion of new, renew and join allocation requests, please complete your application by Friday, September 8
•The expiration dates of all user files in Quest global scratch space are extended for another 30 days. You can use "checkscratch utility" to monitor the expiration dates in scratch space:
